Before signing up for Twerk classes, you may have had a few doubts. We have gathered the most common reasons why you haven’t signed up for Twerk yet – and we will show you that, more often than not, the limits are only in our heads!
I don’t have the “right” bum
True – your bum isn’t “right” for Twerk, because there is no such thing as a right or wrong bum. Whatever your body type, you can learn Twerk and move in a way that feels satisfying to you. In class we also put a lot of focus on strengthening your legs and core for stability. How can your body change once you start twerking?
- your bum will lift and become more shapely,
- your core will get stronger,
- your thighs will become firmer,
- your fitness and stamina will improve,
- you will become more flexible, especially in your pelvis, legs and lower back.
I have no sense of rhythm
In beginner groups we start with simple moves and easy routines so that we can keep an eye on your technique and fitness level. We also work on developing your sense of rhythm, and only then move on to choreography. If you think you can’t keep to the beat, you will definitely change your mind after a Twerk class – the music we dance to is full of heavy bass and a clear rhythm. See for yourself on the Twerk playlist we have linked for you:
I’m not feminine enough
If you feel like a woman, you are already feminine enough. Twerk is a dance built around the pelvis, sometimes described as the centre of our femininity. Engaging your whole body builds body awareness, and movement itself releases happy hormones, so we feel good about ourselves and proud that we are doing something for us. It is exactly these emotions that come with dancing that bring out a femininity no fancy choreography could ever replace.
My back hurts
That is exactly why Twerk might be perfect for you! Once your physiotherapist or doctor has ruled out any medical contraindications, well-run Twerk classes with a proper warm-up and stretching can loosen up your sacral and lumbar spine. Dancing helps you keep an upright posture, and exercises that strengthen your core (among other muscles) take pressure off your spine. That way you can get rid of the aches you picked up from working from home or on your feet, and forget about that morning twinge in your lower back!
Twerk is just shaking your bum
The core of Twerk is the characteristic swaying of the hips and bum, plus pelvic isolation. There are many techniques for these moves, used in Dancehall and Hip Hop too, and at our school we also teach Aero Twerk, which combines pelvis and bum movements with acrobatics. Twerk allows for a lot of variety depending on the music, the rhythm and your so-called attitude – the mindset that gives your moves their own character. I’m too shy to dance
Passa Passa is a place designed to help you grow your confidence through better body awareness. Fluid movement makes us look better, and the choreographies we learn in class give you moves you can later use at a club, a house party or a wedding. There is a reason we don’t run classes for large groups – we care about your comfort, and your instructor can take a more individual approach if you need it. We don’t test your skills in your first classes either, so you don’t have to worry about being called out to the middle of the room. Above all, classes are meant to be time you enjoy!
